English Language Training Course (WLS)
In order for foreign healthcare practitioners to glean maximum benefit from attending
medical short courses and practical experiential training in hospitals, we advise
and encourage such persons to attend a full time
English Language Training course
at the University of the Witwatersrand Language School (WLS).
The WLS is a dedicated unit that specialises in the teaching of foreign languages.
Each foreign healthcare practitioner will commence the course with an individual
assessment in order to prepare a customized training course according to each of
their current linguistic abilities and their understanding of the English language.
The course consists of one on one tutoring and group sessions that cover topics
such a sentence structure, use of grammar, syntax, pronunciation, communication
techniques etc. A focus on medical English features towards the end of the period.
Routine course presenters are leading South African authorities on language.
A more focused approach on medical English is presented during the latter half of
the programme.
Weekly and final assessments covering these various aspects are conducted.
Attending the English Language Courses will be of enormous value to foreign medical
