and nursing practitioners improve their skills in the management of medical, surgical
and trauma emergencies.
Scope of the Course
Theory
There are 3 courses that are presented as part of the training program. They are
well-recognized internationally accredited courses supported by associations in
the United States of America and the Republic of South Africa.
The first course is the three-day
Advanced Trauma Life Support course (ATLS™) and
the second is a two-day
Advanced Cardiac Life Support course (ACLS®) that is preceded
by a compulsory
Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers™ course. Full certification
is provided for all courses on successful completion thereof.
Practical Experiential Training
There is an exciting practical component to supplement the theoretical aspects.
There are 3 different areas that the delegates will rotate through:
- Trauma Unit (ER) of the Johannesburg
General Hospital:
This is one of the busiest trauma units in the world. Delegates are guaranteed to
be exposed to a wide variety of trauma related conditions and the management of
these patients in the initial resuscitation phase with the rest of the trauma team.
In addition, there are opportunities to assist with medical and surgical interventions
and procedures such as intubation, inter-costal drain insertion, central line placement,
suturing etc. Opportunities to attend theatre cases are also made available.
- Trauma Intensive Care Unit:
The delegates are exposed to the continued management of severely injured patients
in a world-class intensive care setting. They will be expected to actively participate
in a wide range of patient management activities, in addition to participating in
ward rounds presented by surgical registrars and surgical consultants.
- Pre-Hospital Management:
Delegates accompany Advanced Life Support paramedics on a privately operated emergency
medical service (i.e. ambulance service). This is essentially a road-based service
and delegates will receive exposure to the initial management of medical and surgical
emergencies. In addition, there is the exposure to the use of immobilization equipment
and the extrication of patients.
These rotations are structured according to the total number of delegates.
