Basic Life Support (BLS™)
The
BLS for Healthcare Providers Course™ is intended for participants who provide
health care to patients in a wide variety of settings, including in-hospital and
out-of-hospital settings. These healthcare providers may include (but are not limited
to) doctors, nurses, paramedics, medical technicians, respiratory therapists, physical
and occupational therapists, doctor’s assistants, registrars, interns, medical and
nursing students in training, aides, medical and nursing assistants and other allied
health personnel.
The
BLS™ Course is also designed for anyone who is required to take a Healthcare Provider
Course for employment. The Course is a prerequisite for advanced courses in resuscitation,
including
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (
ACLS®),
Paediatric Advanced Life
Support (
PALS), Advanced Neonatal Life Support (ANLS),
Advanced Medical Life Support
(
AMLS) and BLS Instructor Courses.
The
basic life support course comprises 38 modules and teaches the skills of CPR
and choking for victims of all ages, including ventilation with barrier devices,
pocket masks, bag-valve-mask devices with supplemental oxygen, and the use of Automated
External Defibrillators.
An 80-page
Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Student Manual and CD-ROM is provided to
each participant for review before, during and after the Course.
For successful completion of the Course, participants will be expected to demonstrate
proficiency in CPR and AED use, and obtain a score of at least 85% in the final
written evaluation.
The accompanying CD-ROM contains relevant anatomy and physiology, the clinical presentation
of coronary heart disease, stroke, special situations and risk factors for heart
disease and stroke. The CD-ROM also includes video clip demonstrations of adult,
child and infant CPR and choking, the use of bag-valve-masks and Automated External
Defibrillators.
BLS™ training will come in use in many instances, and professionals in the medical
field who have successfully completed the course have a valuable life-skill.
All successful delegates will be awarded certification from the American Heart Association.
